from Chapter 9, Table 8
Exam trapTable 8 resistance is DC at 75°C. AC circuits over 250 kcmil need Table 9 instead — using Table 8 there is a wrong answer the exam offers you on purpose.

Table 8 is where voltage-drop problems start: it gives circular-mil area and DC resistance per 1,000 ft for each conductor. Exam questions usually want you to find a resistance here and plug it into VD = 2 × K × I × D / CM or the two-wire resistance formula.

Notes that change the answer — 9.8

Notes:

1. These resistance values are valid only for the parameters as given. Using conductors having coated strands, different stranding type, and, especially, other temperatures changes the resistance.

2. Equation for temperature change: R2 = R1 [1 + a (T2 - 75)], where αcu = 0.00323, αAL = 0.00330 at 75°C.

3. Conductors with compact and compressed stranding havesmaller bare conductor diameters than those shown. See Table 5A for actual compact cable dimensions.

4. The IACS conductivities used: bare copper = 100%, aluminum = 61%.

5. Class B stranding is listed as well as solid for some sizes. Its overall diameter and area are those of its circumscribing circle.

Informational Note: NEMA WC/70-2009, Power Cables Rated 2000 Volts or Less for the Distribution of Electrical Energy, or ANSI/UL 1581-2017, Reference Standard for Electrical Wires, Cables, and Flexible Cords, is the source for the construction information.National Bureau of Standards Handbook 100, dated 1966, andHandbook 109, dated 1972, is the reference where the resistance is calculated.

Q1

An elevator's operating control panel uses a Class 2 power-limited control circuit. Which section specifies how this circuit must be protected against overcurrent?

  1. A 620.61(D)
  2. B 620.61(A)
  3. C 620.61(B)(3)
  4. D 620.61(C)
Show answer & explanation

Correct: B — 620.61(A)

620.61(A) governs overcurrent protection of operating devices and control/signaling circuits, pointing to 724.43/724.45 and Chapter 9 Table 11 notes for Class 2 circuits. 620.61(B)(3) instead covers overload protection for motors, not control circuit overcurrent protection.

Q2

A designer is running Class 2 power-limited cables inside a nonmetallic snap-together cable routing assembly above a suspended ceiling in a commercial building. Which section specifies the selection, listing, and installation requirements for the cables run in this cable routing assembly?

  1. A 722.3(C)
  2. B 722.3(K)
  3. C 722.3(L)
  4. D 722.3(E)
Show answer & explanation

Correct: B — 722.3(K)

722.3(K) governs cables installed in cable routing assemblies, pointing to Table 800.154(c) for selection and 800.113 for installation. 722.3(L) covers a different raceway type (communications raceways referencing ENT rules), and 722.3(E)/(C) address cable trays and air-handling spaces, not routing assemblies.

Q3

A contractor plans to install Class 3 power-limited cables inside a communications raceway that resembles ENT tubing, routed through a commercial ceiling. Which section directs the selection, listing, and installation rules for cables run in this type of raceway?

  1. A 722.3(L)
  2. B 722.3(F)
  3. C 722.3(K)
  4. D 722.3(I)
Show answer & explanation

Correct: A — 722.3(L)

722.3(L) covers communications raceways, requiring selection per Table 800.154(b) and installation per 800.113 and the ENT rules in 362.24 through 362.56. 722.3(K) instead applies to cable routing assemblies, and 722.3(F)/(I) address instrumentation tray cable and installation with other systems, neither of which fits a communications raceway.
